MiGhtyDocs

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

This is a great iPhone application that allows you to view your google docs on your phone.

You may say but I can already view my google docs on my phone. Well I say this is better. Below you see an example of viewing a document through the google iphone option

Now here is the same document with Mighty Docs.

This is a free application but the most important feature of the program is once you open the document it is cached. You can view it anywhere even if you do not have an internet or wifi connection. If you live in an area with dead spots (like my apartment) this can be very helpful.

Evernote welcomes google notebook users

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

For a lot of people it was a sad day when they learned that Google was dropping their notebook application.

I say this may be a blessing in disguise because now former notebook users can become evernote users.

Evernote is one of my favorite applications. You can access your information from the web, the application, or from your mobile device. I use it with my iPhone.

Here are some instructions on how to import your data into evernote.

Trust me you need a VPN. Want a free one?

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009
What is a VPN and why do you need one?
Well a VPN is a Virtual Private network and it is used for security
While the VPN is running your information is hidden.
A VPN is good for everyone but a must for people who use computers with wireless connections. The iPhone also has a VPN option.
Their data is the most at risk. See the bottom of this post for a video explaining why VPNs are so important.

Here is a link with an explanation of how they work. If you don’t care how they work you’re just glad they do I have some free ones for you.

I found two free VPNs hamachi and hotspot shield for computers and one for the iPhone.
Hotspot shield is found at http://hotspotshield.com/
From there it can be downloaded and installed on your system. (I would uncheck the “include the hotspot shield community toolbar” in general extra toolbars are a bad idea)  and when you want to run it you can see it like a web page but it soon turns into an RSS feed type page. You will also see an icon in the taskbar.

I like it but the only problem is that it is advertising driven. This means when I searched google for more VPN information I got an add for cricket above the search results.

I didn’t like that so I ditched hotspot shield and tried hamachi.
Hamachi has both a paid and free version. It also works for windows, linux, and mac. If you are using it for non-commercial purposes then download the free version and make sure you choose non-commercial during the installation.
After installation follow this link for how to set it up.
During setup it will ask you to join the test group. You may get an error that it is full. Click cancel and close the guide window. Then create a new network by clicking the network button.
(it is the middle one at the bottom with the three dots that make a triangle) Choose create a new network then name it and give it a password.
Once it is setup there will be a client that you can close by clicking the upper left button and just let it run in your taskbar.
I noticed no problems when using hamachi and will be using it on my laptop from now on.
I do want to add that Hotspot shield has a VPN for your iPhone.
My cousin asked me a while back if I was worried about the data on my iPhone and I told her no. I rarely use it off of an encrypted network and when I do I am careful about what information is transferred. That got me thinking I had never considered the phone connection. Was it secure?
I checked my iPhone and found an option for a VPN and while researching this article I added it. You can also do this by following the instructions at http://hotspotshield.com/clientless/iphone/get_started.php

Voice recorder for the iPhone Braincast

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

One feature that is obviously lacking on the iPhone is that of a voice recorder. Now there is an online service called BrainCast. With BrainCast you can call a phone number and leave a recording and BrainCast is free. The message you record can be up to three minutes.

Create a free account and then add your phone number and email address. Adding your email address means that it will email you the message as a .wav file. In the upper right you can also see the account number and the number you will call.
You can retrieve the message from a regular computer. You can also add a note, categorize it, send as an email, or set a reminder.
The site is not optimized for the iPhone but it is possible to retrieve the message from the phone.
Login and then click he sound icon or if you sent it to your email on the iPhone you can click the .wav file.
It actually works better as a wav file.

YouMail Free Replacement Voice Mail

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

http://www.youmail.com

Have you ever wanted to have specific voice mail messages for different people?
With You mail you can. YouMail is a free, ad supported voice mail replacement service available in the U.S.

Just add the phone number that will be calling and choose one of their existing messages or record your own.

You can record it on the web or over the phone if you do not have a microphone for your computer.

They also have an extensive collection of existing messages including everything from sports related messages to comedy and music.

This video is from their website and is a good comparison of YouMail and regular voice mail.

YouMail greetings

On the other extreme have, you ever received harassing phone calls. YouMail has an option to set certain numbers to get a “ditch” message that says your number has been disconnected.

This is even better than blocking their number.

When you receive a voice mail You mail notifies you. I have mine set so that when I receive a message it sends a text message and an email to my iPhone. The email contains the text from the message and a button to click and play the message.

I don’t know why you would need it but they also have a feature where you can share your voicemail messages via email or by copying code into your blog or website.

I wish I knew about this with my last cell phone I had terrible problems with delayed messages. This lets you bypass any problems your phone company is having with it’s voice mail while also giving you more options.

Welcome to AOL TV listings for the iPhone

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

Welcome to AOL TV listings is what greets you when you surf to AOL’s TV listings site for the iPhone.

You can find it at http://iphone.television.aol.com. Just type in your zip code and click go.

You then get a detailed list of television services in your area.

After clicking save you get the following menu.

Choosing channel guide will give you the total list of channels available. You then have the oportunity to uncheck the ones you do not want to see listed.

Now go back and click what’s on now you will see a list of channels, the shows that are on, and the time.

If you click the magnifying glass or choose complete listings you get the ability to sort by date and category.

When you click one of the shows you get a short synopsis and a list of whenever it runs again.

In the example below you see the Illusionist comes on at 5:50 AM on channel 154 and then 8:50 AM on channel 155.
Of the three I have review this one is the best for casual browsing. I also like the fact that it tells you when the show comes on again. Unfortunately there is no search function but other than that it is the closest to a traditional TV guide.
After all most people use a guide because they don’t know what they want to watch not because they are searching for a specific show.

Summize, search twitter from your iPhone

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

I hear my friends talking about searching twitter to find people with similar interests. They are usually using a twitter client called twhirl.

I however don’t use that application because I use twitter almost exclusively on my iPhone instead of my PC.

Now I can also search because I found a site called summize. http://twitter.summize.com

Now I see why searching twitter is so fun. Here I searched for WKU and found multiple tweets about my old college.

I would recommend summize to all iPhone users. The twitter version also works from a regular browser on a computer.

They also have regular and iPhone versions of another flavor of summize. They search opinions from multiple sources where as the one listed above is only for twitter. See the quote below describing their site.

http://www.summize.com/iphone

“We scour the web for the latest user reviews and blogger discussions, surmise their sentiments, and summarize them here.”

Jott.com voice to text and much more

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

Jott.com is primarily a free voice to text service currently. You can call a number and then it will end an email and txt message to any contact you have verbally chosen.

You can also use Jott to make lists. Send a message to yourself so you can see it in your inbox. Then move your cursor over it and an orange tab will appear.

Then drag them into the list column. Now you can sort them and check them off as you have completed the items on the list.
A second way to add an item to the list is by emailing jott@jott.com with the name of your list in the subject and the item you wan to add in the body of the email. Jott.com also has an iphone version of their site where you can see your messages and lists.
Another thing you can do with Jott is set reminders. You can go to Jott.com on a computer and type a message into the add jott text box and the add reminder link will appear. After typing the reminder click add reminder to save it.
You can call the jott number instead of going to the website. You would tell it you want a reminder and it would ask for the date, time, and subject. It will now send you a text message 15 minutes before the event to remind you.
You can also send a jott to an individual or a group of individuals. On the right use the create a contact or create a group option and name them. Now when you dial the number and it asks who you are calling give it the name of the contact or group.
It will also work with a long list of third party web applications and anything that has an email address you can send things to.
A good example would be evernote. It is not on the list but you can create a contact with the email address they give you for your account. You would call 866-568-8123 and state the contact name you gave that phone number. I gave mine the name evernote. It will confirm which contact you are trying to send something to and then beep. After the beep you will have 30 seconds to record the message. Then it would send out an email to evernote and you would see it under the first notebook. A SMS text message would then be sent to your phone.
These are a few of those sites jott can use directly. The rest can be found at the Jott website.

Search for local movie listings

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

I talked about television search sites in my previous post. Now I’m going to talk about what is currently my favorite movie search site for the iphone.

You type in your location and then you search by theater or movie.
Here is a result for movies
I like to search by theater which gives me this result.

It then shows a list of the movies playing there.

When you choose a movie it gives you a lot of information
You get the length of the movie and how many stars it was given. It then tells you when the movie is playing and it’s genre.
The buy tickets link leads to the http://www.movietickets.com site. If the theaters in your area use this service you can buy tickets here.
Next is the play trailer link. This usually goes to the apple site which provides many high quality trailers. Apple trailers.
The IMDb link does what it says and opens the IMDb by searching for your selected movie.
The last one is the map to option. When you click this the maps application opens and drops a pin at the theater’s location. From there you can route to that location from your current location or a specific address.
